Project: Building a Library and providing bed nets for the school kids
Adopted By: Joy Borra, Stone Mountain, Georgia, USA.
Date: March 12 2006

Itu-AgonThis village community is located about 10 miles outside Nsuhum. It is accessible by a rutted dirt road, cratered by gullies and overgrown with elephant grass.  In some areas, half the road has been washed away. A 20-minute bone-rattling ride took us to the village. The village was chosen as a site of a primary school to serve nearby villages because of its location and accessibility. As a result, it had grown into a community of more than 1,400.

A horde of school children, all clad in standard school uniforms ranging from ages 5 to 10 years old, had assembled outside their classrooms. They arrange themselves in neat lines, facing the school building, their hands clasped-as if to say prayers. I suspected that, they had assembled to sing the school anthem or some recitation to mark the end of the day. When I pulled away 4 youngsters and asked them to pose for a picture, the rest of the entire children stampeded to join them for the picture. Mobbed, I gave the camera to Mr. Owusu and they all rushed toward him.

We met with the headmistress of the school. On a prior visit, Mr. Owusu had explained the purpose of our mission or project, which she acknowledged. She then led us to meet the odikro(the chief), Mr. Anorf, who intimated that he had not been feeling well. I suspected it was malaria, but he gave me a firm handshake.

He appeared to be in his 70s; a lanky man about 5’ 9” and clad in red sweatshirt, which was odd in the stifling heat, but understandable since he was not well. The attire was also a sure sign of malaria infestation. He was wearing beige pants and flip flops.

The chief also complained about exactly the same problem: heavy malaria infestation of the village. The source of the problem was exactly the same: a large pool of stagnant water. The culprit was exactly the same: Road reconstruction that has blocked drainage. The victims were exactly the same: The villagers including the odikro himself and SCHOOL CHILDREN. The same heart wrenching scenario.
